RORY WAS STILL SHAKEN after seeing the groom at the ball – dressed as a royal – and Griff. Unlike her, the deputy had probably been invited.

Devlin had seen her and started to come after her, but seemed to change his mind. She’d seen the anger and frustration in his expression. He’d wanted to chase after her but something had held him back. The same thing that had kept him from calling to a guard to stop her?

Which made her think that, as she’d suspected, he didn’t belong at the ball anymore than she did.

Interesting, she thought as she circled around the palace and tried to decide what to do next. She stopped under some shrubbery, chastising herself for being so foolish as to come here tonight in the first place.

Getting into the ball had been easier than she’d hoped. So had mingling among the many guests. But getting upstairs to this massive desk was a much bigger problem than she’d thought it would be. She’d seen herself having a run of the palace simply because she was in costume.

Discouraged, she glanced upward. According to the plans Georgia had gotten her, the princess’s suite should be directly–

Rory started at the sight of a strange light flickering in what was one of the rooms in the royal suite.

She moved to get a better look. The drapes were drawn, but through a space between them, she could see movement. It appeared someone dressed identically to her groom was in the room above her just beyond the parted curtains.

What was he doing in the princess’s rooms? Or was that Prince Broderick dressed in the same costume? But if it was the prince, why was the man sneaking around with a small flashlight?

It had to be her groom. But what was Devlin doing in the same room Rory herself had hoped to get into? Apparently they had more in common than she’d first thought.

She watched him. He seemed to be looking for something.

Her gaze took in a second set of French doors that led to the wide balcony, the drapes on its doors drawn. She let her gaze fall from the balcony down the lattice trellis to a small stone wall a few yards in front of her.

As a tomboy, she’d climbed her share of trees. It had been awhile, but she hoped now that it was a lot like riding a bike.

Cursing her costume under her breath, she considered taking the time to go back to her horse and change clothes since she had no reason to return to the ball – especially after seeing Griff in there.

Deciding it would take too long, she crossed to the stone wall, hiked up her dress and swung up to grab hold of the trellis, praying it would hold her weight as she began to climb.
